Coping With Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Try and relax yourself when you go to the toilet - keep your mind occupied with something else.

During times when stress levels rise, our bodies do several things to prepare for the fight or flight response. Breathing increases and may become shallow. Hormones flood the system along with other chemicals preparing us to battle or run from a perceived stressor. And blood moves from the digestive system to other places, slowing digestion so that energy can be put towards battling the stress rather than digestion.

We all experience some stress every day in one way or other but most people are unaware of stress is in their lives. A global survey showed that 50% admitted to stress. Of the fifty that said they did not have stress, 80% were found to be stressed on further testing. The unpredictability of Irritable Bowel Syndrome symptoms mean baseline stress is likely to be high.

Keeping a food diary can help you detect the dietary sources of your irritable bowel syndrome flare-ups. If you begin to notice a pattern pointing to a potential culprit, eliminate the particular food from your diet and see if your symptoms disappear as well.

You need to make sure you look after yourself. Just talking about your problems can help you with your irritable bowel syndrome. It's important to note that IBS is not the cause of cancer or other more serious illnesses. Although some irritable bowel syndrome treatments may seem simple don't underestimate how much what you eat and how you feel affects your body.

Some people fear that IBS can develop into bowel cancer. This is simply not true. A poor diet high in processed meats can lead to bowel cancer, and this type of diet could lead to IBS in some people. but IBS itself does not cause cancer, as far as current research suggests.
